Leviathan: Find It at a Great Price — $34!

Leviathan is a red blend made by Andy Erickson.  He is a wonderful winemaker whose résumé includes Staglin, Screaming Eagle, Alpha Omega, and his current personal label Favia.  He is one of the most sought after consultants in Napa Valley.  Search his name, and you will be impressed with the wineries where he has had a hand in making the wine.

Leviathan 2018 is a red blend that consists of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Cabernet Franc.  It is accessible when you open the bottle yet shows more robustly with decanting.  You will get aromas and flavors of boysenberry, black cherry, and plum.  The grapes are harvested from various vineyards in the area and come together in a rich harmony.

This bottle is a bargain at $40; yet from one of my personal favorite wine stores (the Grape Tray), you can get it for $34. Some shipping restrictions may apply, but it’s worth the call to see what’s available.  Act fast, as the supply could run out.

Here is the review by Jeb Dunnuck, who gave this wine 94 points: “2018 Leviathan Proprietary Red: Always a great value, the 2018 California Red Wine is a Bordeaux blend put together by Andy Erickson. The wine reveals a ruby-purple hue as well as complex notes of red and black fruits, green tobacco, cedary spice, and spring flowers. These all flow to a medium to full-bodied, elegant wine that offers a good overall concentration, seamless tannins, and a great finish. Very much in the style of the 2018 vintage with its more streamlined, elegant style, it’s going to benefit fro 2-3 years of bottle age (although it’s far from unapproachable today) and keep for a solid 10-12 years or more. This is one of the more age-worthy examples of this cuvée that I recall.”
